Finasteride is a competitive inhibitor of the enzyme 5-alpha reductase, which converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), resulting in decreased serum levels of DHT.

Prosfin is generally well tolerated. In clinical studies, the following adverse experiences were reported in 1% of patients treated for 12 months:
